Looking for a fun way to get involved?
The Congressional Award is about challenge. It is a fun and interesting way for teenagers to get more involved in something they already enjoy or would like to try for the first time.
The Children's Cultural Center is a sponsoring organization for this prestigious program of the United States Congress. The Congressional Award is voluntary and non-competitive, offering young people the opportunity to set personal goals and achieve them. Awards are earned, not won. Goals are set based on each person's abilities. Young people may register to participate at 13 years, 6 months and must achieve their goals by their 24th birthday.
How to earn the award
Participants select an adult advisor who helps them to set challenging but achievable goals and to plan activities to reach those goals. There is a goal in each of four areas:
| Area | Description | Sample Activities |
|---|---|---|
| Volunteer Public Service | Up to four different goals that provide public, non-partisan service to others and the community. |
|
| Personal Development | Up to two different measurable goals, such as personal interests, social, or employment skills. |
|
| Physical Fitness | Improving quality of life through two or more non-competitive fitness activities. |
|
| Expedition / Exploration | Organize, prepare, plan, and execute a wilderness or venture experience, either individually or as part of a team. |
|
With every goal comes the opportunity to achieve an award.
Award Levels
There are six levels of the Award. Participants start by earning certificates and then
earn medals as more hours are accumulated, as shown below.
| Certificates | Medals | |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 60 | 200 |
| Silver | 120 | 400 |
| Gold | 180 | 800 |
Each level is cumulative; time spent on one award is carried on to the next level.
