Friends of Historic Richboro School, formed in December 2006, is a group of Northampton Township (Bucks County, Pennsylvania) residents and business owners, along with concerned citizens, who wish to preserve and refurbish the historic Richboro School on Second Street Pike, just north of Almshouse Road.
The Richboro School began its life as Northampton High School in 1913 and served as the township's first large, modern high school. The first class of six graduated from this three-year high school in 1914. The building ceased to be a school in 1988 and has since fallen into disrepair. It is now owned by Commerce Bank, who relocated the building in January 2003 and started refurbishing the exterior in October 2006. Upon completion, they will turn it over to Northampton Township, where its occupancy faces an uncertain future.
The Children's Cultural Center, a non-profit organization that focuses on educational programming for the children of Bucks County, filed an official request to the Northampton Township supervisors in 2002 to become a tenant of the Richboro School, along with the Northampton Township Historical Society. They propose to lease the building to other non-profit and grass roots organizations, with priority to those serving Northampton Township.
It is our plan to work with the Children's Cultural Center of Bucks County and other organizations to raise money and awareness of this preservation effort for the good of the community and all who care about historic preservation.
